Hey friends! Jayde here, I hope your planning is going well! If you’ve been following along with our “Budget Before You Book” series, then you know we love to feature local Nashville ‘friendors’ on the blog who are relatable and have stunning work.

I recently sat down with Brasspenny Photography, and was so energized by our conversation! Rachel Tenpenny, the owner, is such a light. She’s the kind of person who makes you comfortable in 0.5 seconds and puts her whole heart into her clients. I wanted to give you all a chance to get to know her as well! Keep reading below for more, and to see images of her breathtaking work……

How did you get your start in photography?

Rachel: “I feel like I really got started as a kid... my parents took so many photos and videos of us as kids, and so of course when I was old enough to work a camera I wanted my own.

I had my little film cameras in 7th and 8th grade, and a little point and shoot canon in high school. My friends always loved the snaps i took of them at school, and later on people would ask me to edit their MySpace photos! Hah! However, as much as I enjoyed it, I never thought of it as a viable career option. It wasn't until all of my "solid" plans weren't working out, and I was about to drop out of college, that I thought I might as well give it a try.

So, I did finish my degree with a bachelors in photography, and at that point was getting paid a little here and there to take photos of my friends and families. STILL, I never thought of it as anything but a fun hobby and side hustle. That side hustle grew and suddenly I had a 9-5 and also shot 30 weddings in the same year. WHAT?! So, it just kind of organically grew itself! I still can't believe this is my ‘job,’ I feel very lucky.”

What is your style of photography?

Rachel: “The words I hear a lot are romantic, happy, and vibrant!”

Who is your ideal client?

Rachel: “I love people who aren't afraid to play and goof around in front of the camera and couples who can't keep their hands off one another!”

Where are some of your favorite places to shoot around Nashville?

Rachel: “If my couple suggests a downtown Nashville vibe, we literally just walk around! there are so many cool little nooks, fun colors, and LIFE going on for couples who want more elegance, there are SO many gorgeous venues who will let you shoot on their property for a small fee.

Where is your favorite destination location to shoot?

Rachel: “I honestly have so much emotion and memory tied up with my destinations, it’s really hard to say. Italy, Iceland, Greece, Portugal — those have my been my favorites so far! Within the US, I've had SO much fun on the West Coast shooting. The light and the landscape out there on the West Coast is just insane.

Is there anything else you'd like for our readers to know about you or your photography?

Rachel: “One thing I've heard countless times is "even your iPhone photos of your family are SO GOOD... I wish I could do that!" Well, now you can! I have officially started selling presets —- filters where you can edit your phone images the same way I do - and people have been majorly impressing me with the before’s and afters they're sending in!
